North Bali

The north coast of Bali is one of the quietest parts of the island. On the south to north road you will pass thru Bedugul, the mountain resort. Kebun Raya or Botanical Gardens within 325 acres of tropical rain forest has hundreds of varieties of wild and cultivated orchids and is a must for orchid lovers. Visit the colorful fruit and flower market nearby. On the shores of the lake is one of the most beautiful temples in Bali, Pura Ulun Danu, dedicated to the goddess of the lake. Avoid weekend visits, as it is a favorite Balinese holiday destination. The Bali Handara Country Club, is not far from the lake and is a beautiful cool place to enjoy a round of golf.. Gigit waterfall off the main road is one of the highlights for tourism in this part of Bali, however the numerous small shops near the entrance detract from the experience. Singaraja the biggest city in north Bali is a dusty, hot Asian city. I usually head straight to Lovina beach, famous for its black sand beaches, beautiful sunrises, and early morning excursions out the Bali Sea to visit with the dolphins. There is no surf on this coast so it is a great beach for safe swimming. Nearby Lovina you can visit the Banjar Tega Hot Springs and the Buddhist Monastery. Further to the west there a wonderful diving opportunity in Pulau (Island) Menjangan. The island is about a 30 minute small boat ride from Pemuteran harbor. There are no hotels on the island but it is a great snokle or diving destination. The waters and reef surrounding the island are perfect for viewing sea life and coral reefs close to the shore. The sea life includes barracuda, clown fish, star fish, and a wide variety of beautiful coral and fish. Best bet is to take a day trip from your hotel nearby as they will pick you up with a small box lunch. The tour operators provide snorkel and dive equipment but check the equipment before you leave and also make sure they have life vests. In January and February the seas can be choppy so give yourself plenty of time to take the excursion.

Bali, Impressions of Paradise - Suggested Itineraries around the islandThe Brahmavihara Arama in Banjar is Bali's only Buddhist monastery. The monastery has beautiful views. The monastery is around four km up an obvious turn-off from the main road.

Continue on along the road past the monastery and find is the steaming Air Panans Banjar, or the Hot Springs of Banjar. These hot springs are beautifully landscaped with lush tropical plants, and it is recommended that you indulge for at least few hours or days.

The fantastic Pondok Wisata Grya is set in the hills very close to the springs, is certainly worth a splurge. The Grya Sari has an expensive restaurant in a lovely setting, or you can eat well at the inexpensive Restoran Komala Tirta overlooking the springs.
